NAI arbitrator courses
The NAI currently offers arbitrators three NAI arbitration courses (in Dutch): an arbitrator course, a course in hearing skills and a course in drafting arbitral awards.
- The NAI arbitrator course (1 day) focuses on the principles of arbitration law and the role of the NAI. It also deals with the typical pitfalls of arbitration and the dynamics within the arbitral tribunal.
- The NAI course in hearing skills (1 day) focuses on acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to run a hearing as an arbitrator. During this course, we will discuss professional ethics, focusing on hearings. We will also discuss the organisation and preparation of the oral hearing, gather information at the hearing, and attempt to settle.
- During the NAI course on drafting arbitral awards (2 days), the legal and regulatory framework for writing an arbitral award will be discussed based on a real arbitration file. Participants will practise with the decision-making model and be challenged to write their arbitral award based on the arbitration file.
NAI secretary course
Aspiring and new secretaries can participate in the secretary course (1 morning or afternoon). A secretary fulfils an important role in arbitration and contributes to the arbitration procedure’s efficiency and quality. During the secretary course, teachers discuss important topics such as the appointment and role of the secretary in arbitration, the course of the procedure and procedural complications that a secretary may face in practice. The teachers use practical examples to explain the importance of drafting proper procedural orders. They also focus on the legal and regulatory requirements for an arbitral award.
